Curriculum
The
Montessori classroom is prepared so that the children can
independently choose work from the different areas of the room.
The materials are arranged
in sequence from simple to complex to offer opportunities for the
children to choose a work that is at their appropriate level and to
give them an opportunity to challenge themselves. The activities in
the Montessori classroom are referred to as “work”, not toys. The
children work with the materials rather than play with them. This
terminology gives the activities added dignity. The children enjoy
calling their activities “work” because they can identify with the
work their parents perform. The children see that purposeful work
can be enjoyable. The children find the work gratifying because they
determine what they want to do. The children are not made to do work
for which they are not ready for or interested in.
